West Window Press Release

Leaking church window to be restored

The West Window of St Peter’s Church, Levenshulme, which is seen from the A6 Stockport Road is soon to be restored.

The congregation of St Peter’s is delighted to announce that, following fundraising from within the congregation, grant awards and with the support of the community, this project is now going ahead. Work will begin on 1st February 2021 on the West Window of the Church, which due to age and weathering is in need of repair and restoration. The project is costly and we are grateful for a large grant from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, smaller grants from the All Churches Trust and The Duchy of Lancaster and generous giving from individuals.

The building can now be made weather proof for the continued use by the congregation and their community support initiatives as well as a resource for the community. Following the restoration of the Lych-gate in 2018 in time for the First World War Centenary, St Peter’s hopes this project will enhance the view from the A6 and the visual environment of Levenshulme.

George Reeves, Rector of Levenshulme said: “St Peter’s church is an iconic building in the heart of Levenshulme.  As well as a treasured place of worship, its work in the community is secured by the renovation of the big West Window, generously funded by Viridor Credits, other grant makers and members of the congregation of St Peter’s.”

Afzal Khan, MP said: “It is fantastic news that work is now beginning on St Peter’s Church West Window. St Peter’s is an integral part of our area’s diverse community. In their Church, the congregation host a weekly night shelter for asylum seekers and refugees, a collection point for our local credit union, and so many other activities that enrich the lives of Levenshulme residents. That’s why I am so pleased to hear they have secured funding to undertake this vital work to help safeguard their Church for another 160 years and beyond!”

Gareth Williams, Operations Manager at Viridor Credits, said: “Churches play a central role in bringing diverse elements of our communities together. Maintaining them is essential to maintaining a strong community spirit. We were delighted to be involved in this iconic project for the people of Levenshulme and beyond.”

Landfill Tax and the Landfill Communities Fund

The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) is an innovative tax credit scheme enabling Landfill Operators (LOs) to contribute money to organisations enrolled with ENTRUST as Environmental Bodies (EBs). EBs use this funding for a wide range of community and environmental projects in the vicinity of landfill sites. LOs are able to claim a credit against their landfill tax liability for 90% of the contributions they make.

Since its inception in 1996, over £1.3billion has been spent on more than 51,000 projects across the UK. For further information, please visit www.entrust.org.uk or see HMRC’s general guide to Landfill Tax.
